Engine replacement?

I have an 1987 kawisaki nija 600r and I would like to put a newer engine in it? I doesnt have to be a kawi engine, but does anyone know of a motor that will fit?
I understand that this doesnt seem logical. But this is my project bike and since

You probably can't put any other engine in it without a lot of frame reworking. The frame and engine are made to fit each other.
