Doing first oil change on 2000 BMW 540i, where does the copper ring for the filter go?

I found the oil that was recommended for it and the oil filter. It comes with a copper ring along with the rubber O ring. I have no idea where the copper ring goes.

This is a crush washer which is used to replace the old crush washer after you drain the oil from the oil pan. This washer goes on the plug that you remove from the oil pan to drain the oil. Make sure the old washer is not stuck on either the oil pan
