Are 1976-1985 Mercedes 240D/300D simple to fix and reliable vehicles?

I'm trying to find a worthy vehicle to replace my 1982 BJ60 Landcruiser diesel.
I can't stand the newer vehicles, poor quality, too many electronics/sensors to go wrong. The W123 Mercedes diesel is a car I would be happy to own.
The
1976 was the final year for the W115, the predecessor to the W123 chassis. The W123's run was from 1977 to 1985.
In North America, the 300D only came with an automatic transmission but the 240D could be had with either an auto or a 4-speed
