Cleaning a bagless vacuum air filter?

How do you do it? I just bang it on the ground till most of the fluff comes off. But my vacuum is getting weak. The store is out of stock, and in the meantime I was wondering if anyone else had a good method for cleaning an air filter? Some kinda solvents,

I have one and what I do is rinse it under warm water and use a toothpick to get all the corners. I use the toothpick extremely gently because the air filter can tear. Make sure you let the filter air try (I use paper towels in a rush) before putting
